Small Block Chevy Dynoed Combos

(Combos 25-32)

Engine combinations 25-38 come from page 75 of Engine Masters 1999. All 14 combos deal with the same test short-block. Each combination varies intake, camshaft, carburetor, or heads. These next combinations are the very helpful to the budget-minded engine builder. Keep in mind that the pistons, crank, and rods can be stock parts as long as the engine is not run at too many rpm's.

Combo 25.

Combos 25-29 use World Products Sportsman II heads on a 355 cu. in. engine. Carburetor, intake, and cam are varied.

Combo 25 uses a 750 cfm carb, a Performer RPM intake, and a very conservative cam with 262° of duration. The combination makes 367 HP and 402 ft-lbs of torque.

MAX Torque: 402 @ 4100

Combo 26.

Combo 26 keeps all but one of the components from Combo 25—a healthier cam is used this time. The cam swap produces 49 more HP and only drops the torque 6 ft-lbs.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 750
Heads: World Products Sportsman II
Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 274° hydraulic, with 274/286° of duration, 230/236° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.487/0.490 in. lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.6:1 rockers is 0.519/0.523 in.)

Combo 27.

Combo 27 goes back to the 262° camshaft, and a 600 cfm carb is used. This combination makes 356 HP and 384 ft-lbs of torque. Compared to Combo 25 (the same cam but a bigger carb), this combo produced 11 less HP and 18 less ft-lbs of torque.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 600
Heads: World Products Sportsman II
Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262° hydraulic, with 262/270° of duration, 218/224° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.462/0.469 in. lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.6:1 rockers is 0.493/0.500 in.)
Rockers: Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6:1
Pistons: Ross Racing flat tops
Rods: Lunati 4340 steel
Crank: cast
Distributor: GM HEI with an MSD coil
Compression: 9.5:1
MAX HP: 356 @ 5600
MAX Torque: 384 @ 4100

Combo 28.

Combo 28 is almost identical to the previous combo, but the Performer RPM intake was exchanged for the Edelbrock Performer. Although the Performer is depicted as inferior to the RPM, this engine only produced 2 less HP and gained 1 ft-lb of torque. Perhaps the Performer RPM intake is not so superior to his little brother after all.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 600
Heads: World Products Sportsman II
Intake: Edelbrock Performer
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262° hydraulic, with 262/270° of duration, 218/224° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.462/0.469 in. lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.6:1 rockers is 0.493/0.500 in.)
Rockers: Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6:1
Pistons: Ross Racing flat tops
Rods: Lunati 4340 steel
Crank: cast
Distributor: GM HEI with an MSD coil
Compression: 9.5:1
MAX HP: 354 @ 5600
MAX Torque: 385 @ 4100

Combo 29.

Combo 29 swaps the 600 cfm carb for the 750 cfm carb. With Sportsman II heads, a Performer intake, and 262° cam, this combination produced 356 HP and almost 400 ft-lbs of torque.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 750
Heads: World Products Sportsman II
Intake: Edelbrock Performer
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262° hydraulic, with 262/270° of duration, 218/224° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.462/0.469 in. lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.6:1 rockers is 0.493/0.500 in.)
Rockers: Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6:1
Pistons: Ross Racing flat tops
Rods: Lunati 4340 steel
Crank: cast
Distributor: GM HEI with an MSD coil
Compression: 9.5:1
MAX HP: 356 @ 5600
MAX Torque: 395 @ 4100

Combo 30.

Combos 30-34 use World Products S/R Torquer heads instead of the better-flowing Sportsman II's. These heads are marketed to compete with the lower-priced iron heads such as the Vortecs and rebuilt factory GM heads. A pair of these heads cost $500 to $600 assembled and ready to go.

Combo 30 uses the 600 cfm carb, the 262° cam, and the Performer RPM intake. The engine produces 341 HP and 380 ft-lbs. Compared to the same setup with Sportsman II heads, the Torquers make 15 less HP and 4 less ft-lbs.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 600
Heads: World Products S/R Torquer
Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262° hydraulic, with 262/270° of duration, 218/224° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.462/0.469 in. lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.6:1 rockers is 0.493/0.500 in.)
Rockers: Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6:1
Pistons: Ross Racing flat tops
Rods: Lunati 4340 steel
Crank: cast
Distributor: GM HEI with an MSD coil
Compression: 9:1
MAX HP: 341 @ 5600
MAX Torque: 380 @ 4200

Combo 31.

Combo 31 uses the larger carb and Performer intake. The result is 338 HP and 381 ft-lbs of torque. Compared to the Sportsman II's with the same components, this engine combo produced 18 less HP and 14 less ft-lbs. We can begin to tell how much better the Sportsman II's are than the Torquers. However, upgrading to the Sportsman II's cost about $10 per HP over the Torquers. Is the extra power worth the money?

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 750
Heads: World Products S/R Torquer
Intake: Edelbrock Performer
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262° hydraulic, with 262/270° of duration, 218/224° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.462/0.469 in. lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.6:1 rockers is 0.493/0.500 in.)

Crank: cast
Distributor: GM HEI with an MSD coil
Compression: 9:1
MAX HP: 338 @ 5600
MAX Torque: 381 @ 4200

Combo 32.

Combo 32 is the same as Combo 31, except the Performer RPM is used. This upgrade makes 10 more HP and 10 more ft-lbs of torque. In this case, the RPM manifold proves to be better than his little brother. Remember that on the Sportsman II manifold swap, the change did not make much of a difference.

Compared to Combo 25 with the same cam, carb, and intake but Sportsman II heads, this engine produced 19 less HP and 11 less ft-lbs. The Sportsman II's prove to consistently be worth 15-20 more HP and 10-15 more ft-lbs than the Torquers.
