Small Block Chevy Dynoed Combos

(Combos 17-24)

Combo 17.

Combo 17 is the last combination from the AFR web site. This combo uses the same parts as Combo 16, except a more aggressive roller cam is used. This engine is over the 500 HP/ 500 ft-lbs mark—it could easily achieve low 10's in the quarter mile in a Nova, Camaro, Corvette, etc. This engine is one of the most powerful engines on my site and is perfectly streetable. Just imagine what a healthy dose of nitrous could do.

Combo 18.

Combo's 18 and 19 come from pages 50-51 of Engines 2000.

Combo 18 uses rebuilt GM heads with big valves, a long-duration camshaft, and a 750 double pumper carb. GM heads have always been mass-produced; this has caused GM to produce heads that meet both performance and economical needs. Therefore, it is usually more difficult to make GM heads flow as well as the performance-only aftermarket heads.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Holley 750 double pumper
Heads: GM #882 castings, milled to 71 cc, with 2.02/1.60 in. valves

Comp. Ratio: 10:1
MAX HP: 317 @ 5200
MAX Torque: 368 @ 3700

Combo 19.

Combo 19 uses a 383 cu. in. stroker engine with Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads and a street-oriented roller cam. This engine produces impressive power.

Displacement: 383 cu. in.
Carburetor: Holley 650 double pumper
Heads: Trick Flow Specialties Twisted Wedge
Intake: Edelbrock Victor Jr., ported
Camshaft: Crane hydraulic roller, with 276/284° of duration, 214/222° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.488/0.510 in. lift
Rockers: Crane 1.5:1 aluminum roller

Rods: stock
Crank: cast
Distributor: MSD Pro Billet HEI
Comp. Ratio: 9.8:1
MAX HP: 451 @ 6000
MAX Torque: 445 @ 4500

Combo 20.

Combo 20 comes from a web article that is cited on the last Combo page.

This engine combination is pretty close to Combo 19. A larger carb and more aggressive cam is used. The exact compression ratio is not mentioned, but it is probably closer to 9:1. This engine makes power and torque almost identical to Combo 19.

Displacement: 383 cu. in.
Carburetor: Holley 750 double pumper
Heads: Trick Flow Specialties Twisted Wedge
Intake: Edelbrock Victor Jr.
Camshaft: Crane hydraulic roller, with 286/296° of duration, 230/236° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.510/0.512 in. lift.
Rockers: Crane roller, 1.5:1
Headers: 1 5/8 in.
Pistons: KB hypereutectic
Rods: 5.7 in.
Crank: cast
Comp. Ratio: 9:1 to 10:1
MAX HP: 450 @ 5750
MAX Torque: 445 @ 4750

Combo 21.

Combo 21 comes from page 60 of the January 1990 Hot Rod Magazine.

This engine combo has 383 cu. in. of displacement, a 750 cfm carb, Brodix -8 heads, a Performer intake, and a short-duration roller cam. The Brodix -8 heads are made to compete with the Sportsman II's, Iron Eagle's, and other similarly-priced heads. This build-up produces a good amount of power and lots of torque.

Displacement: 383 cu. in.
Carburetor: Holley 750
Heads: Brodix -8
Intake: Edelbrock Performer
Camshaft: Crane hydraulic roller 278, with 278° of duration, 222° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.470 in. of lift
Rockers: Crane aluminum roller, 1.6:1
Headers: Cyclone Corvette 1 5/8 in.
Pistons: Manley flat tops
Rods: Chevy High Performance forged 5.7 in.
Crank: cast
Distributor: MSD with a 7AL module
Comp. Ratio: 10:1
MAX HP: 431 @ 5500
MAX Torque: 452 @ 4000

Combo 22.

Combos 22-23 come from page 64 of the March 1997 issue of Car Craft Magazine. The first combo is the stock engine, and the next is the engine rebuilt with aftermarket parts.

Combo 22 is a stock engine. Notice the smaller valves, the long duration but short lift of the cam, and the Quadrajet carb. This combination produces a low 248 HP but a street-oriented 330 ft-lbs of torque.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Quadrajet
Heads: GM #882 castings, milled to 71cc, with 1.94/1.50 in. valves, and a 3-angle valve job
Intake: GM cast iron
Camshaft: GM, with 280/294° of duration, 204/202° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.389/0.408 in. of lift.
Headers: 1 3/4 in. with 3 in. Flowmaster exhaust
Pistons: GM cast domed (2.4cc)
Rods: stock
Crank: cast
Distributor: stock
Timing: 34°
Comp. Ratio: 10:1
MAX HP: 248 @ 4600
MAX Torque: 330 @ 3600

Combo 23.

Combo 23 uses Holley Systemax II components. The cam seems a little big for street use, but Holley designed the parts of this kit to work together. It increases power by 152 HP and 76 ft-lbs of torque. If you compare this engine to engines with other aftermarket heads, this combo does not make as much power. Holley heads do not seem to be quite as good as comparable heads, although they still cost as much.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Holley 750 double pumper
Heads: Holley Systemax II, with 2.02/1.60 in. valves, and 185 cc intake runners
Intake: Holley Systemax II
Camshaft: Holley Systemax II, with 296/304° of duration, 234/242° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.479/0.495 in. of lift. (Corrected valve lift with 1.52:1 rockers is 0.485/0.502 in.)
Rockers: Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller 1.52:1
Headers: 1 3/4 in. with 3 in. Flowmaster exhaust
Pistons: GM cast domed (2.4cc)
Rods: stock
Crank: cast
Distributor: MSD Pro Billet HEI
Timing: 36°
Comp. Ratio: 10.2:1
MAX HP: 400 @ 6000
MAX Torque: 406 @ 4200

Combo 24.

Combo 24 comes from the Edelbrock web site.

This engine uses the Edelbrock RPM kit. This camshaft is even more aggressive than the Holley cam, and it is on the ragged edge of street use. Again, though, the designers made the components of the kit to work together. This engine makes a respectable amount of power and torque.

Displacement: 355 cu. in.
Carburetor: Edelbrock 750
Heads: Edelbrock Performer RPM
Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM
Camshaft: Edelbrock Performer RPM, with 308/318° of duration, 234/244° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.488/0.510 in. of lift.
Headers: 1 3/4 in.
Pistons: TRW
Rods: stock, polished and shotpeened
Crank: stock steel
Distributor: MSD 6A
Timing: 36°
Comp. Ratio: 9.5:1
MAX HP: 420 @ 6000
MAX Torque: 415 @ 4500
