Small Block Chevy Dynoed Combos

(Combos 93-100)


Combo 93.

Combo 93 comes from pages 82-85 of the August 2001 issue of Car Craft.

Combo 93 is a GM ZZ4 350 cu. in. engine that has a mechanical roller cam and AFR 195 heads. This potent combo puts out 523 HP and 454 ft-lbs of torque. Awesome for the street.

Displacement: 350 cu. in.
Carburetor: Speed Demon 850, with a 1 in. open spacer
Heads: Air Flow Research 195, with 2.02/1.60 in. valves.
Intake: Edelbrock Victor Jr.
Camshaft: Comp Cams mechanical roller, with 0.578/0.584 in. of lift (with 1.52:1 rockers) and 242°/248° of duration @ 0.050 in. of lift.
Rockers: Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller, 1.52:1
Exhaust: 1 3/4 in. headers with 3 in. Flowmasters
Pistons: GM high-silicon aluminum

Combo 94.

Combos 94-97 come from pages 40-46 of the April 1998 issue of Super Chevy Magazine. They all use the same ZZ4 crate motor with AFR 190 heads. Hydraulic cams are varied from an economical grind up to a cam with more than 0.500 in. of lift. When compared to the 523 horse build-up above, these 4 combos have a smaller carb, a lower-RPM intake, and a smaller cam.

Combo 94 has a cam with only 0.431 in. of lift and 252° of duration (206° @ 0.050 in. of lift). This build only produces 348 HP and 398 ft-lbs of torque.

Combo 95.

Combo 95 improves upon the former build by using a moderate High Energy cam with 0.460 in. of lift and 268° of duration (218° @ 0.050 in. of lift). The result is 380 horses and 402 ft-lbs of torque.

Combo 96 uses a Comp Cams Magnum cam with 0.486 in. of lift and 280° of duration (230° @ 0.050 in. of lift). A respectable 404 HP and 403 ft-lbs of torque are made.

Combo 97.

Combo 97 upgrades to a larger Magnum camshaft. It has 0.507 in. of lift and 292° of duration (244° @ 0.050 in. of lift). 431 HP and 400 ft-lbs are produced.

Combos 98-102 come from pages 23-30 of the September 2001 issue of Chevy High Performance. Each of the 5 engines is a different build-up that makes more power than its predecessor.

Combo 98 uses World Products S/R Torquers and a smaller camshaft to produce 330 HP and 410 ft-lbs.

Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM
Camshaft: Comp Cams Xtreme Energy hydraulic, with 250/260° of duration, 206/212° of duration @ 0.050 in. of lift, and 0.432/0.444 in. of lift.
Headers: 1 5/8 in.
Comp. Ratio: 9.25:1
MAX HP: 330 @ 5000
MAX Torque: 410 @ 3500


Combo 99.

Combo 99 uses Vortec heads and a bigger cam than Combo 98. The heads are pocket ported, and this helps the engine to make 409 HP and 427 ft-lbs of torque. The torque peak occurs at 3500 RPM, but the power peak is at 6000 RPM. The torque peak is only at 58% of the power peak, instead of the normal 70-80%.

Combo 100.

Combo 100 is a 383 cu. in. engine with 10:1 compression and Trick Flow 23° heads. The Comp Cams mechanical street roller cam allows this mule to make 454 HP and 469 ft-lbs of torque. A 383 cu. in. engine with high-flowing heads and a massive cam should not use 1 5/8 in. headers like this combination. With 1 3/4 in. headers, the previously restricted engine would have produced more power and torque.
